Retaining Wall Contractor • Chicago’s North Shore, Chicagoland & Lake Geneva
Stone Work Runs in This Family
Before ILT Vignocchi existed, there was a master mason in an Italian immigrant community on the North Shore, teaching his son that a wall is a promise: hold this ground, carry this weight, look right doing it for fifty years. That son was Harry Vignocchi, and he founded this company. When we build retaining and seating walls, we are still practicing his father’s trade.
Walls That Shape and Define the Landscape
Walls That Shape and Define the Landscape
Walls That Work, and Walls That Welcome
Some walls are engineering: holding a slope, terracing a grade, protecting a foundation from water it never asked for.
Some walls are furniture: a warm stone edge that seats twelve without a single chair. The best are both. As a retaining wall contractor with in-house design, we calculate the loads and drainage behind the wall as carefully as we choose the stone on its face, so the structure disappears into something that simply looks like it belongs.
Where Walls Earn Their Place
01
Structural Retaining Walls
Reclaim the third of your property that is currently just a hill you mow.
02
Terracing
One steep yard becomes three usable rooms, stacked.
03
Seating Walls
Twelve people sit down and nobody carried a chair out.
04
Steps and Transitions
Get from the back door to the lower lawn without it feeling like a hike.
05
Garden and Border Walls
Low stone that makes a planting bed look composed rather than merely edged.
06
Walls That Hide What Shouldn’t Show
Exposed foundation, pool equipment, and utility runs, tucked behind stone that matches the house.
07
Integrated Lighting
Stone that glows along its edges once the sun is gone, so the steps stay safe and the terrace stays open.

TESTIMONIALS
Trusted for Stone That Holds Its Ground
“They’ve had great advice about a retaining wall I wanted, and a lot of drainage improvements needed around my house.
Very easy to work with.”

What to Know Before Choosing ILT Vignocchi
-
Almost always because of water. A retaining wall holds back saturated soil, and without drainage behind it the wall becomes a dam under hydrostatic pressure until it leans, cracks, or fails outright. Sound construction requires a compacted base, free-draining gravel backfill, drain tile to carry water away, and reinforcement on taller walls. ILT Vignocchi includes all of that in every retaining wall we build across Chicagoland, which is the part you never see and never have to think about again.
-
A retaining wall is structural. It holds back soil and manages the grade, which means it needs engineered drainage, reinforcement, and a footing sized for the load behind it. A seating wall is freestanding, built from the same materials at roughly sitting height, and designed for people rather than for soil. ILT Vignocchi frequently builds both on the same property and uses the same stone throughout, so the grade change and the seating read as one composition instead of two projects.
-
Usually, yes. Most Chicagoland municipalities require a permit and an engineered design for retaining walls over four feet, measured from the bottom of the footing to the top of the wall. Height is not the only trigger: a wall carrying a surcharge, meaning a driveway, a structure, or sloped ground above it, can require engineering well below four feet. ILT Vignocchi confirms local requirements during the design phase and handles permitting as part of the project, since codes vary from village to village.
-
Segmental block and natural stone walls built on a compacted base with proper drainage routinely outlast the homeowners who commissioned them, while walls built without drainage can begin leaning within a few seasons. ILT Vignocchi has been building walls across Chicago’s North Shore, Chicagoland, and the Lake Geneva area since 1969, and the family’s first trade was masonry, which is why we treat what goes behind a wall as seriously as the stone on its face.

Ground Held Right for Generations
A good wall outlives the person who built it. Ours are built by people who take that personally.
