Drainage Contractor & Irrigation Systems • Chicago’s North Shore, Chicagoland & Lake Geneva
Nobody Ever Admires the Drainage. That’s the Point.
Our founder, Harry Vignocchi, holds a U.S. patent for a drainage structure still in use today, so it is fair to say we find water genuinely interesting. Most homeowners meet it differently: a flooded planting bed, a soggy lawn, a foundation line that worries them every storm. Either way, water management is where our art meets our engineering.
Drainage and Irrigation Designed Into the Landscape
Drainage and Irrigation Designed Into the Landscape
Drainage With a Designer’s Conscience
The trick with drainage is that the solution has to disappear.
Anyone can trench a yard into a construction site; a drainage contractor with a designer’s conscience solves the water while making the landscape better looking than before. French drains under a dry creek bed that reads as an intentional garden. Grading corrections hidden inside a replanted slope. Irrigation that keeps the estate green without a single visible apology. Form and function, refusing to choose.
Both Halves of the Water Problem
01
French Drains and Dry Creek Beds
The pipe does its work underground while the surface looks like a garden feature you chose on purpose.
02
Catch Basins and Channel Drains
The puddle that always sat at the low corner of the terrace, gone within minutes of a storm.
03
Downspout and Sump Discharge Routing
Roof and basement water carried well away from the foundation instead of dumped beside it.
04
Water Arriving From Off Your Property
Runoff from the street above and the neighbors on either side, intercepted before it ever reaches your beds.
05
Grading and Site Correction
The ground reshaped so water leaves politely, every time.
06
Slope Stabilization and Erosion Control
Swales and plantings that keep the hillside where you left it after a downpour.
07
Irrigation System Installation
Zoned watering with smart controllers, so the property stays green without a single visible apology.
08
Seasonal Start-Up and Winterization
Lines blown out before the first freeze and adjusted again in spring, handled by our own care team.

“They’ve had great advice about a retaining wall I wanted, and a lot of drainage improvements needed around my house.
Very easy to work with.”

What to Know Before Choosing ILT Vignocchi
-
Watch for standing water more than a day after rain, mulch that washes out of beds, a musty smell or water line along the foundation, gutters discharging right beside the house, ice forming in the same spot each winter, and plantings that fail in the same low area year after year. Any one of those means water is moving where it should not. ILT Vignocchi walks the property during or just after a storm whenever possible, because the conditions causing the problem are also the ones that reveal it.
-
A French drain is a gravel-filled trench containing a perforated pipe that collects subsurface water and carries it by gravity to a safe discharge point. Water filters down through the gravel, enters the pipe, and travels away from the house, which relieves pressure against foundations and keeps saturated soil from drowning plantings. ILT Vignocchi installs French drains as part of a whole-property water plan across Chicagoland, usually concealed beneath a dry creek bed or planting so the solution is invisible once finished.
-
Yes, when both are designed together. Chicagoland now swings between dry stretches and sudden downpours within a single season, so a property needs efficient irrigation for the dry weeks and engineered drainage for the wet ones. ILT Vignocchi plans them at the same time rather than patching them separately: zoned irrigation with smart controllers for watering, and grading, drain lines, and swales for runoff.
-
It should improve it. Trenching a yard and walking away is what gave drainage work its reputation, but a properly designed solution disappears into the landscape. ILT Vignocchi designs the fix and the finish as one job, so a French drain surfaces as a dry creek bed, a grading correction becomes a replanted slope, and downspout lines vanish beneath beds. Within a season, most clients stop noticing the solution at all.
-
Before the first hard freeze, which in Chicagoland usually falls in mid to late October. Blowing the lines out with compressed air keeps water from freezing and cracking pipes, valves, and backflow devices over the winter. ILT Vignocchi handles winterization and spring start-up for clients on our maintenance programs, along with seasonal adjustments as weather patterns and plantings change.
