Landscape Planting Services in the Chicagoland Area: How Plant Selection Gets Made
Plants are the only part of a landscape that keeps changing after the crew leaves. Landscape planting services across the Chicagoland and Lake Geneva area work in northern Illinois zone 5b, on clay-rich glacial till, under deer pressure that quietly decides what survives.
Our horticulturists select against those three facts rather than against a catalogue, because a plan that ignores them looks correct for exactly one season.
ILT Vignocchi remains family-led into a second generation from its Island Lake base, with president Donna Vignocchi Zych having joined her father at the firm in 1994 and taken the reins in 2006.
Plant knowledge sits in-house rather than in a supplier's hands, which is what lets us specify a border and stand behind it three years later.
What Is Included in Professional Landscape Planting Services?
Selection, sourcing, setting and aftercare. A planting scope covers the plan itself, nursery sourcing and inspection, bed preparation, setting depth and spacing, mulch, and the first season's monitoring.
Seasonal rotations sit alongside it where a property wants color that shifts through the year. Our residential landscape services carry all of that, and the part clients notice most is the sourcing, because a specimen chosen at the nursery by someone who knows what it should look like in year five arrives differently.
When Is the Right Time to Plant Trees and Shrubs in Northern Illinois?
Spring and early autumn both work, and the choice follows the plant. Most woody material establishes well when planted in autumn, when soil stays warm while air cools and root growth continues after the canopy shuts down.
Spring suits marginally hardy material that benefits from a full season ahead of its first winter. The window is short here, since zone 5b sees average annual extreme minimums of minus 15 to minus 10 Fahrenheit and a late planting leaves roots no time.
Nursery availability narrows it further, because the material worth having gets committed early in the season.
How Long Does It Take for New Plantings to Establish?
Two to three seasons for shrubs and perennials, and longer for trees, before a planting reads as settled. Roots have to leave the nursery ball and move out into the surrounding soil, and in heavy clay that takes longer because the root works into a denser medium.
Watering discipline through the first two summers decides most of the outcome. A property watered on a fixed schedule rather than to soil moisture is the one that loses material in year two.
How Do You Choose Plants for Clay Soil and Zone 5b Winters?
Root architecture first, then aesthetics. The Illinois State Geological Survey describes the Wadsworth Till Member as underlying almost all of Lake County, with a textural composition spanning clay through clayey silt, and three quarters of the county as morainic upland over mostly silty clay till.
That favors species tolerant of a dense root zone and slower oxygen exchange. We specify on that basis, then place the fussier material where the soil profile is genuinely better.
Amending an entire bed rarely changes the subsoil a root eventually reaches, so selection carries more weight than soil work.
What Holds Up to Deer Pressure in Lake County Landscapes?
Selection, mostly. Lake County Forest Preserves reports that overabundant deer eliminate understory vegetation, and that populations across the preserves range between nine and 90 deer per square mile.
At the upper end of that range, a plan built on hosta and yew amounts to a feeding schedule. We build the structure of a bed out of material deer tend to leave alone, then place vulnerable plants where proximity or screening protects them. Seasonal color rotations get the same treatment.
Let Our Horticulturists Plan Your Plantings
A border that looks right in its fifth year was specified by someone who knew the soil, the zone and the deer. ILT Vignocchi designs, sources and installs plantings across the Chicagoland and Lake Geneva area, with horticulturists in-house rather than on call.

In Summary
Do you install plants your team did not design?
We do, though we walk the plan first. A drawing produced elsewhere sometimes specifies material that does not suit the soil or the exposure on that particular property, and raising it before the order goes in beats discovering it in year two.
Do you work outside Illinois?
Our work covers the Chicagoland and Lake Geneva area, which carries the portfolio into southeastern Wisconsin. Estate properties and long-standing gardens make up most of that work.
Can new plantings go in around an established garden?
Matching into a mature bed is mostly a question of root competition and light. An established canopy has already claimed the water and the soil volume, so new material either gets sited outside that reach or gets chosen for the conditions the older planting created.
How much watering does a new planting actually need?
Deep and infrequent beats daily and shallow, and the interval follows the soil rather than the calendar. On clay, water moves slowly and stays put, which means the risk is usually overwatering a bed that has not yet drained from the last cycle.
Is deer fencing ever the better answer than plant selection?
On a property under heavy pressure with material that has to stay, fencing earns its place. For most gardens the structure of the bed can be built from material deer tend to pass over, which is a cheaper and less visible solution than enclosing the garden.
